SEM: Search Engine Marketing
Search Engine Marketing or SEM for short, is a term that defines when a business manipules features of their website in an effort to improve results in Search Engines like Google.  The goal is generally to a few keywords relevant to the business, and then rank it the top ten (first page) of search results for that term.  SEM has two branches, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay Per Click advertising (PPC).

SEO: Getting "organic" results...
SEO refers to ranking in the organic search results or those results in the center of the page.  This is generally accomplished by optimizing tags, content and links.  Other than time, there is no investment to rank highly in the organic results.

PPC results:
PPC results are the ads above and to the side of the organic listings.  These ads are paid for by the advertiser based on how many people click the ad.  To start a PPC ad campaign the business must invest some advertising dollars.  One of the great benefits if a PPC advertising campaign – compared to other media types – is that a business can start a PPC campaign for a few dollars, and can stop it at any time.
